Outstanding commercial corridors sustain small businesses and improve the quality of life for the entire community. The West Broadway Improvement District (WBID), also known as a Business Improvement District (BID), is a tool that has been used locally, nationally and internationally to improve and revitalize commercial districts. Established by the West Broadway Business & Area Coalition in 2015, the WBID is the first Self-Managed Special Service District (SSD) outside of downtown, following the successful establishment of a new Self-Managed Policy. The WBID is also, so far, the only SSD/BID in North Minneapolis. Go to the City of Minneapolis website to see a MAP of SSD/BIDs including the WBID, Downtown Improvement District, and current City Managed Districts across other Minneapolis neighborhoods. Services and amenities vary greatly per district and can include: banners, holiday decorations, streetscape greenery, sidewalk and street cleaning, snow removal, and marketing.
Since 2015 the WBID on West Broadway Avenue has used the additional assessment paid by property owners largely to contract with Better Futures MN to provide a Broadway Ambassador crew walking the avenue weekdays, picking up litter, removing weeds and grafitti, checking in with businesses, helping report issues and lobbying for local and City remedies, providing spring cleaning and seasonal plantings in the planters. In addition to the Ambassador crews, add holiday decor and seasonal event banners to street lamps, and support Broadway area marketing. We’ve also been able to leverage this property owner investment to raise other governmental and private foundation support of over $500,000 in the first 5 years, supporting physical improvements, amenities and corridor events. The WBID will have a positive and long-lasting impact on both the neighborhood and the larger community of Minneapolis.
