Some of this work includes:
- Advocacy on public policy, planning, and projects aimed at improving the corridor which, among other things, has resulted in the development of the West Broadway Alive Plan for the corridor and the decision by the Minneapolis Public Schools to build their new headquarters on the avenue.
- Operating a highly successful Façade Improvement Program that awarded nearly $190,000 to 26 businesses for improvements to their storefronts over the last two years and has secured an additional $236,000 for 2011–2012.
- Engaging in various efforts to improve safety and security in the West Broadway Area which, combined with a range of efforts by other organizations, contributed to a 20% drop in crime in 2010 as compared to 2009.
- Promoting and assisting in the organization of events like FLOW and the Fall and Spring Clean-ups.
In 2011 the West Broadway Coalition will be maintaining these efforts as well as inaugurating some exciting new initiatives and reviving some popular ones that haven’t been offered for awhile. This year, you will hear from the WBC about:
- The West Broadway Web and Social Media Promotion Project that will give every business in the West Broadway Area an opportunity to have a presence on the internet through the WBC’s website as well as learning to market their businesses through Facebook and Twitter.
- Business Lunches and Networking Events that are back by popular demand and will provide an opportunity to learn about issues and projects in the West Broadway area along with a chance to raise concerns and suggest ideas on how the WBC can be more valuable to its stakeholders. The first event is scheduled to happen in April 2011.
- Special open meetings to discuss the implications of continuing the public improvements on West Broadway from Girard to the river. Public improvements are great, but they mean problems with access to local businesses during construction and assessments for the work.
- The West Broadway Outdoor Market opening in June of 2011. Open markets bring fresh food and new enterprises to a community along with new people who also stop and shop at area businesses.
